The New gTLD programme is now moving ahead at full speed and the first New gTLDs are expected to be delegated by the end of this year. Sedo has used this survey to discover exactly how aware businesses are of this change. New gTLDs give businesses the opportunity to further define their offering online and register a more appropriate available domain.

The key findings from the survey are:

· 63% of small to mid-sized business owners are unaware that new gTLDs will be available in 2013 and many do not understand what the value of these new addresses will be.

· Over half of respondents feel that new gTLDs will make the internet more confusing.

· More than 40% of the respondents said there was no advantage or they were unsure of what the advantage of a new gTLD would be.

· 94% of respondents said they were not currently planning to purchase a new gTLD.

Some of the other findings are also of interested to domain resellers. Over 40% of businesses said that their domain names were ‘Very Important’, the highest option on the applicable scale. Also, over 47% of respondents said that they ‘Often’ type domain names directly into their browser bar as oppose to using a search engine. The importance of type in traffic should not be underestimated!

Domain Name Resellers should make sure that all of their clients are aware of the new gTLD programme and encourage them to take advantage of this exciting opportunity.

Purchasing domain names in relevant TLDs will not only help them define and protect their brand but could also provide a new SEO value.
