ICANN announces root zone expanded with over 100 new GTLDs

With 2014 well in progress ICANN have announced that the number of new GTLDs delegated to the root zone has now topped 100. With a rapid expansion from the 22 previous standard GTLDs ICANN have signified their intent of ensuring that 2014 is the year of these GTLDs with plenty more to be added shortly.

"There are now almost five times more generic Top-Level Domains than there were only a few months ago and that translates to greater consumer choice," said Akram Atallah, President of ICANN's Global Domains Division. "We are as eager as everyone else to see what type of innovation these new Domains will usher into the online world."

Further to this news another 200 Registry Agreements have been signed by GTLD application allowing them to progress into the final stages of the application process and move closer to delegation into the root zone expanding the number of GTLDs further. This year the internet is expected to make some massive changes with the new GTLDs to be an integral part of this. There is no denying that 2014 looks to be a very interesting one indeed for domainers!
