Nominet have today released the news that .UK is set to become available this summer – the 10th June – to be exact. On Nominets new site they state this is going to be ‘a shorter, sharper domain name which puts the emphasis firmly on
your website name – exactly where it should be.’
This will bring new opportunities for you to create an online identity for your customers or build on an already growing one – just in time for the release
of many new gTLDs over the coming four years. But don’t worry, nothing will change for you or your customers with existing .uk domains - .co.uk is still
staying along with org.uk and all other domains ending in .uk!
Nominet have already made the decision to implement a grandfathering period meaning if you already own a .co.uk you may have first rights to the .uk
version – you can check if clients have the rights to the .uk version of their .co.uk domain by visiting the Rights lookup Tool. As Nominet say “If you have a unique .co.uk, .org.uk, .me.uk, .net.uk,
.plc.uk or .ltd.uk the shorter and snappier .uk will be reserved especially for you for free up until 10 June 2019 as long as your domain remains
registered.”
The pricing and registration structure exactly the same as their current .co.uk ccTLD (country code Top Level Domain)! This means that you will be able to
register your direct .uk domain for a period between 1 and 10 years, with a small surcharge imposed for single year registrations.
As an already Nominet Accredited Registrar
we’ll of course be offering .uk domains as soon as possible. If you want to register directly with Nominet to receive updates about the .uk domain name
extension, you can fill in their form here.
