New gTLD News Roundup 10/10/2013

The first of ICANN’s New gTLDs are now just weeks away from delegation.

Domainbox.com is keeping our domain name resellers right up to date with the latest news. With that in mind, here’s a roundup of some of the most important stories from the last few days:

New gTLDs

Domain Name Wire - ICANN gives new TLD applicants a faster path to market .

Domain Name Wire (DNW) have reported that ICANN have changed the name-collisions plan, which was designed to stop any conflicts between new top level domain names and any existing DNS systems.

After initially stating, on 5th August 2013, that low risk strings (80% of the total amount) could be delegated with only minimal addition testing. Uncalculated Risk strings (20% of the total amount) would need additional testing which would take 3 – 6 months to complete, while the two High Risk strings (.home and .corp) would be delayed until they were categorised as low risk, which could potentially be indefinitely.

Now however, DNS detailed a modified plan from ICANN which stated that both low risk and uncalculated risk strings could speed up their delegation if they agree to block registrations of strings that could be problematic in their particular TLD.

This is after a collision report against each individual string and a list of strings which ICANN suggest the New gTLD operator should block.

Good news for most applicants! Very bad news for .corp and .home, as it’s unlikely to help speed up their delegation process!

Domain Incite - First gTLD Extended Evaluation results published.

DomainIncite reported on the first Extended Evaluation results being published for .ltd, .llc and .express.

.ltd and .llc are not yet free of any conflicts as they will still need to ‘face the uncertainty of Governmental Advisory Committee advice’.

.express has also passed through extended evaluation but is still in contention as Express LLC and Donuts are still competing for the string.

ICANN Blog – Moving Forward with Delegation of Top-Level Domains

Jeff Moss and John L. Crain from ICANN talk about the progress made in New gTLD delegation in recent weeks and months.

They talk in detail about the DNS collision issues which ICANN have examined and the change to the name-collision plans which Domain Name Wire reported on.

They say:

“We believe the proposals outlined above afford a balanced way of moving forward. The plan minimizes the risk that collisions will cause serious harm by implementing measures to avert the problem by mitigating the associated risks and continuously monitoring the situation.”

So there’s some of the latest news for our domain resellers as we move towards the launch of hundreds of new domain name extensions .

These are exciting times for everyone in the industry!
