ICANN Domain Registrars - Will You Offer .APP?

ICANN domain registrars have been discussing the exciting news that new TLDs will be available in the near future, meaning that there is a possibility for people to register new TLDs in whatever field they wish, with no limit on the type of company that they are. We are due to see an influx of applications like .ECO and .HORSE and all sorts of other brands that can afford to apply for an extension, including geo location extensions like .NYC and .WALES which is exciting news for domain resellers as it will give more scope to offer domains to your customers. Brands will be able to direct their customers to their site using these extensions, and the most recent announcement of a TLD in the pipeline is .APP.

Apps have been popular for the past few years since the advent of the iPhone and android mobile offerings. They make mobile internet browsing far easier for users, and for this reason they have flooded that market. The catchphrase from apple is ‘there’s an app for that!’ and there quite literally is, from music to photo to maps. Whether you want to check your PayPal balance or see whether there are any delays on public transport, you can quickly and easily download an app that will help you out.

The ‘.APP project’ is a community funded endeavour and is thought to be a place where app developers can go to gain support from the entrepreneurs in this field. It is designed to be open to all app designers regarding of the funding, size of the company or field, speaking as a group and giving a definition to the industry.

The community project is currently looking to garner followers and raise the money to fund the project. They will need $185k to pay the ICANN fee, and are also trying to rally support via Twitter to support their offering when it goes to ICANN. They feel that the more backing they have from the developer community, the more solid their application to ICANN will be.

It’s interesting to see how this one will develop and whether as a domain reseller, you will be able to offer this in your storefront website in the future.
