ICANN 47 will take place in Durban, South Africa

ICANN have announced that their 47th meeting will take place in Durban, South Africa. The .za Domain Name Authority will be the relevant hosts. ICANN meetings take place three times a year all over the world. There are discussions about every aspect of ICANN policy and everyone involved in the organisation and the domain name industry at large has a chance to voice their opinions. These meetings should be of great interest to domain resellers as they can give you a glimpse into the future of the industry! The meetings run from July 14th – 19th 2013. There are workshops, development meetings and open forums.

The ICANN meeting schedule rotates through the geographic regions defined by ICANN. ICANN staff had the job of analysing different proposals from different parties and decided that Durban was the most suitable.

To quote ICANN from their board meeting documents:

“Resolved (2012.08.28.05), the Board accepts the proposal of the .za Domain Name Authority, and approves that the ICANN 2013 Africa Meeting shall be held in Durban, South Africa from 14-19 July 2013.”
“The Staff performed a thorough analysis of all of the proposals and prepared a paper to identify those that met the Meeting Selection Criteria. Based on the proposals and analysis, the Staff has recommended that ICANN 47 be held in Durban, South Africa.”

This will follow the two already scheduled meetings, ICANN 45 in Toronto Canada, which takes place from the 14th – 18th October 2012 and ICANN 46 in Bejing, People’s Republic of China, from the 7th – 11th April 2013.
