Huge UDRP Filed as Chrysler Attempt to Reclaim 940 Domain Names

The Chrysler Group LLC has filed a UDRP which contains a list of 940 domain names. The Uniform Domain-Name Dispute-Resolution Policy (UDRP) is the means by which trademark holders can dispute domain name registrations and attempt to move the domain names listed in the UDRP back to their control.

The list of domain names in this case is 940 domains long! That's an amazing number of names to try and recover in a single UDRP. Chrysler are clearly trying to ensure that their brand is protected. Domain name resellers should know that when clients register a domain name, they should be encouraged to register as many variations, in as many top level domain names or domain name extensions as possible.

In this case the disputes mainly revolve around a number of terms which Chrysler have a trademark on:

  • Alfa Romeo;
  • Fiat;
  • Chrysler; and
  • Dodge

Clearly it's important to companies to protect their trademarks. The risk of cyber squatting has been reduced by the UDRP process. However, there is still a real risk of a companies trademark being squatted on, parked or even worse, used to detrimentally affect the companies image.

According to Elliotsblog there is a strange aspect of this filing which may be clarified later:

" I checked out a few of the domain names to see how they are being used, and the Fiat names I checked are forwarded to FiatSale.com and the Alfa Romeo names I checked are forwarded to AlfaRomeoSales.com. Interestingly, those two domain names appear to be registered to a car dealership. Neither one of these landing page domain names are included in the UDRP filing. "

There are a variety of TLDs included in the ruling to. Again this is a chance to highlight to your clients the importance of securing multiple TLDs for trademarked terms and brand names.

Domainbox.com luckily makes this process easy for you. We offer you hundreds of domain name extensions or TLDs to resell. That means every client has the chance to secure their trademarks and brand names in a huge range of localities.
