EEA countries to be eligible for .eu domains in the New Year

Eurid has announced that they are expanding the current list of countries that are eligible to use .eu domains to include those in the European Economic Area (EEA). This move will mean that residents, companies and organisations in Iceland, Lichtenstein and Norway will be able to register .eu domains from 8 th January 2014.

The move will be rolled out from the 8th January and was sanctioned by the European Commison and has been in the pipeline for some time with initial discussions starting in 2000. Previously only residents of countries based in the European Union were allowed to register the .eu Top level Domain however this will now allow a wider number of registrants access with more than 5 million previously ineligible residents being included.

The EEA is made up of the member states of the EU except Croatia and the member states of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA). It allows EFTA countries to liaise and trade with EU members without joining the EU directly.

Eurid also announced that this change will also mean that the existing Registration policies for many countries will be updated to include the new eligibility definitions.
